Affogato al Caffe {Affogato}


If you like espresso and you like gelato {or ice cream} then this dessert is for you. Affogato means “drowned” in Italian, which is exactly what you are doing to the gelato/ice cream with the hot and steamy espresso. I never know whether to eat it with a spoon or a straw so I use both ; )ย  I even like to up the ante by adding a shot of Amaretto {and the only Amaretto for me is Amaretto di Saronno}

It is of course optional as is the whipped cream. But I’m an all in kinda girl ; )



Affogato al Caffe
What you’ll need: {makes 1 serving}
2-3 scoops vanilla gelato/vanilla ice cream
1 scoop whipped cream
1 shot espresso
1 shot Amaretto di Saronno

What to do:
1. Add ice cream into glass. Add whipped cream. Pour amaretto over ice cream/whipped cream. Pour espresso over ice cream/whipped cream.

2. Serve immediately.

    I just did the same thing recently…but upped the decadence quota a bit with some caramel sauce and salted nuts. Guests went nuts over the easiest dessert ever.

    Affogato is one of my favourite desserts, although I’ve never had a perfect one from a restaurant – luckily now that we own a coffee machine, it’s easy to make them at home, just how I like them. Never tried it with amaretto – sounds glorious.

    There is something about the lusciousness of vanilla ice cream and bold flavor of strong espresso – for me, a dreamy combination:) I love my European Ice Cafes, with strong coffee, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. reminds me of my days at the University, when we sipped these drinks or desserts and dreamed about the future:) Thanks for awaking a beautiful memory!

    Wow, this sounds delicious!
    I have a suggestion based off an old trick I picked up from working at a coffee shop as a barista–perhaps try mixing together the espresso with the whipped cream before topping it off on the ice cream or you could even mix it with a bit of half and half. The reason for this is that the espresso tends to turn out more bitter when you add it directly onto the frozen ice cream than it would if you had cooled it down a bit first.
    I’m going to try this recipe as soon as I can find somewhere to pick up some amaretto syrup! Cheers!

    OMG! This is like my favorite dessert! I make the espresso in my pump driven machine at home with Talenti vanilla bean gelato and Disaronno which is the best amaretto. I could eat this all day long if I was not watching calories.
