I am what most people would call a shutter bug. Whether I have my big daddy DSLR or my iphone on me, I’m always snapping a photo of this or that. Of people and moments that mean a lot to me. Memories that I wouldn’t be able to access if they just disappeared. Do you ever worry about your data disappearing? Your precious family photos. Videos you’ve taken of vacations, your children’s recitals, graduations? I don’t have to worry about that any more since I was introduced to M-DISC. What is M-DISC you ask?
“M-DISC is a unique storage solution that preserves photos, video, and important documents…practically forever. People use M-DISC to create a “hard copy” of their treasured memories, and important information. By hard copy we mean something they can hold in their hands, and have complete control over. This process is also called “archiving”, formerly only embraced by businesses and universities, it is not gaining traction among consumers.
M-DISC is the brand leader in personal archiving because it’s economical, simple to use, and will preserve data for more than 1,000 years.” 1,000 years people. That means generations and generations to come behind us will be able to share and cherish our data.
Long-term storage of digital photos, video, etc., is a serious problem for families and companies. Most people believe that digital information written to a hard drive or flash drive will last indefinitely. This is not true. Data storage expert Robin Harris says, “Storage is the most difficult problem in information technology today.”
I’m raising my hand right now. I, like a lot of people I know, store my beloved digital data on my hard drive, on DVD’s and flash drives. I was shocked to find out that this simply ain’t the best route to go. See that chart above? Gasp right.
Here a few simple steps to home archiving
- Think about the information you want to preserve for a lifetime. Most people archive photos, video, music, and a few important documents.
- Resist the urge to be perfect. Corporations have discovered that there is little benefit in weeding through every photo, or taking time to title everything in a perfect way. A single M-DISC can hold quite a lot of information. It’s best to get started protecting what’s important as soon as you can.
- If you don’t have access to an optical drive, pick one up on Amazon or your favorite electronics store. Look for the “M-DISC” logo on the box. M-DISC works in any Blu-ray writer. Drives are relatively inexpensive, and if you’re going to archive, you’ll probably want your own. For a list of suggested drives or compatible DVD drives check out our PAGE.

Sounds good right? You might think this is going to cost you and arm and a leg. Nope. M-DISC is a low-cost, simple way to preserve the digital information that matters most. Flash drives, hard drives, and other writeable discs are primarily designed for short term performance, and make poor archival tools. These will lose data over time unless copied onto a new medium. Archiving important memories like photos and video insures they’ll be around for your lifetime, and preserved for generations to come. We all want that yeah?
What are you waiting for? Go forth and preserve your precious memories!
