Heartburn. It’s something we’d all like to keep off of our menus whether we’re eating at home or out, right? I’m no exception. I have always enjoyed foods with a spicy kick to them. I’m not talking super spicy (I’m just not personally cut out for super spicy) foods that would make me cry (think Indian hot), just a little tingle thank you very much. Sometimes however, spicy and occasionally overly rich (read fatty) foods don’t necessarily agree with me.
What am I left with when they don’t? You guessed it, heartburn. It happens to the best of us. When it does I want relief and I want it stat. Fun fact: did you know that heartburn has nothing to do with your heart, so why in the world do they call it heartburn?

In my best authoritative voice … Here is a little more specific information about heartburn.
- Heartburn has nothing to do with your heart, so why call it heartburn? Probably because it’s easier than saying “esophageal burn.” Heartburn happens when acid escapes from your stomach up into your esophagus. Unlike the stomach, the esophagus isn’t meant to house acid, so that’s when you feel the burn. Yeah, I’d go with “heartburn” too.
- Food is the most common heartburn trigger. Heartburn triggers vary from person to person, but tomatoes, fatty foods, and coffee are among the usual suspects. Chocolate, garlic, raw onions, mints, vinegar, citrus fruits and juices, spicy foods, ketchup and mustard and alcohol are also culprits.
- Who gets heartburn? Look around you: many of the people you see may get occasional heartburn. What triggers heartburn varies from person to person, but some of the common culprits can include diet, smoking, and being overweight.
