40 is The New 20 Cocktail
A few months back we took a Carnival CRUISE . Have I mentioned that I LOVE to cruise. Cruisin’ is aca-AWESOME. I’d probably live on one of those floating cities if I could swing it. What’s not to love? Well I suppose if you have motion sickness that might be a problem and well the rooms are on the small side, but you’re not really in them except to change and sleep so that takes care of that problem.
What is to love? For starters there is all the food and drinks you could ever want available 24/7. There are attentive staff who actually remember your name. That still BLOWS my mind every. single. cruise. They memorize new names every. single. WEEK. Gold star to them.
Back to the drinks. One of my favorite bars on the Carnival Sunshine was ALCHEMY. You could find me perched on one of those bar stools fairly often. It’s one of the most unique bars I’ve been to. The mixologists were not only entertaining but very talented. One of my favorite cocktails was called 40 is the new 20. It’s made with: vodka, cranberry juice, pomegranate liqueur and citrus. It’s dangerously delicious.
Here’s what Carnival says about Alchemy – “You don’t need to be a mix-master to appreciate Alchemy – you just have to be up for trying something new. We’ve been stirring up some magic behind the scenes here at Carnival to produce a tasty series of all-new cocktails served at this unique vintage-themed cocktail “pharmacy.”
Let our cocktail specialists prescribe you something from the bar, with both nonalcoholic and alcoholic elixirs to remedy what ails you. Or, create your own custom concoction from a variety of unique ingredients.”
While on board we took a mixology class at Alchemy. I learned everything from the history of cocktails (completely fascinating), to how to choose the proper glass for cocktails to how to properly shake a cocktail and even the importance of ice.
It was entertaining and I’d completely recommend it if you’re on board. We even received a diploma at the end of class. Yes, folks I’m official.
We also learned a few garnish tricks. We got to set things on FIRE. Oh yeah baby. Don’t worry it was completely supervised and we were careful (as should you be). To do this: Into your non-dominant hand, take a piece of lemon peel, carefully hold it between your index finger and thumb, place the lemon peel slightly above your cocktail glass, bend the peel, at the SAME time you’re bending the peel, using your dominant hand light your lighter.
The oils that are releasing from the lemon peel will ignite. Run the lemon wedge around the rim of your cocktail glass and then drop it in the cocktail. Pretty cool yeah?
As ALWAYS please drink responsibly, and feel free to invite me over when you do.
Disclaimer: Carnival hosted our cruise. Opinions are my own. Always have been. Always will be.

Vodka and cranberry was one of my favorite drinks when I was in my 20s, and I love this updated version (with pomegranate!) for my 40s. This is one I’ll have to try with my girlfriends.

I would really love to try a short cruise to see how I do. I’m not a fan or water or big boats or big waves or….. BUT I’ve heard such wonderful things about cruises!

Mmmmm. I adore pomegranate anything. And since I’m 45, I’ll use twice the vodka. 😉

I’m with you on that girlfriend! I love cruising and I finally made it to Platinum with some nice perks. Always visit alchemy bar for a cocktail or 3! So fun to watch them make the drinks. The sampler is a lot of fun, you choose which 4 and then guess which is which when they put them on your placemat. Will certainly try this one but a little less cranberry and a bit more vodka. Thanks Carnival. See you soon on the Valor!
