What is Flan?
Flan is a popular dessert in Spain and throughout Latin America. It consists of a baked sweetened egg custard with a soft caramel topping. What’s not to love about that right?
The soft caramel sauce is placed on the bottom during preparation so that when the dessert is inverted after baking and chilling the caramel topping will then be on top of the decadent dessert. Neat little trick.
8 simple ingredients are all you need to make this easy orange flan. The preparation starts by making a simple caramel sauce and then carefully placing it into pie plate. Remaining ingredients go into a blender and then are poured on top of the caramel sauce. The pie plate is surrounded by a water bath and then baked. Easy right?
Why use a water bath?
A water bath provides a milder heat source and adds moisture to the oven when baking. This helps to prevent the flan from becoming too rubbery. Rubbery should be reserved for rubber bands.
The hardest part will be waiting for the flan to chill. TIP: I like to prepare my flan the night before so it has plenty of time to chill and I’m not overly tempted to eat it before it’s ready.
If you’d like, garnish your flan with fresh mint, orange slices, fancy peels and/or a grating of orange zest.
