When we say quick and easy, we mean it. This recipe is made with boneless skinless chicken breasts, that are cut into bite-size pieces then fried until golden and crispy. Once fried, the chicken is tossed with a sweet orange sauce. This homemade version comes together in about 20 minutes and makes a great dinner any night of the week.
WHAT IS ORANGE CHICKEN SAUCE MADE OF?
Our orange sauce is both sweet and spicy. It’s made of orange juice and zest, vinegar, garlic powder, sugar, soy sauce, oil, and red pepper chili flakes.

WHAT DOES ORANGE CHICKEN TASTE LIKE?
You mean besides being incredibly delicious? Think tangy, sweet and spicy bites of chicken. There is naturally a strong orange flavor (hello Orange Chicken) and the spicy comes in the form of pepper flakes which add just the right amount of zing to this recipe.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED TO MAKE ORANGE CHICKEN?
You’ll need the following 11 KEY ingredients to make this Orange Chicken at home:
- chicken breasts
- all-purpose flour
- FRESH orange zest and juice from Cara-Cara orange
- granulated sugar
- reduced sodium soy sauce
- rice vinegar
- red pepper flakes
- cornstarch
- sesame oil
- garlic powder
- Oil for frying
- Sliced green onions to garnish, optional (but encouraged)
TIP: I find a RICE COOKER to be an incredibly helpful kitchen appliance. Mine has a keep warm feature that saves me time when preparing meals during the week. I make a large batch and then use it over the course of a few days.

Quick and Easy Orange Chicken
Ingredients
- 1 large chicken breast - fat trimmed, cut into approximately 1" cubes
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- zest from 1/2 Cara Cara orange
- 4 tablespoons fresh Cara Cara orange juice
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- oil for frying
- sliced green onions to garnish - optional
Instructions
- Place chicken into a small bowl. Sprinkle flour on top. Toss to coat. Set aside.
- Into separate small bowl combine: orange zest, juice, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, red pepper flakes, cornstarch, sesame oil and garlic powder. Whisk to combine. Set aside.
- Into a heavy bottom Dutch oven (or like) add approximately 2" of oil, heat to 350 degrees.
- Carefully add chicken and fry until golden. Do this in batches as to not crowd pot. Transfer chicken to a paper towel lined plate.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add liquid ingredients and cook until thickened stirring frequently. Approximately 1 minute.
- Add cooked chicken and toss to coat.
- Garnish with green onions if desired.
